The Fashion for "Dessert" and "Cake" Candles - Food for Thought

A "Dessert" style candle - image created by AI

When you think of candles, the idea of one that looks like a cupcake or smells like chocolate might sound fun and quirky. However, as a candle maker committed to safety and ethical practices, I’ve made the conscious decision not to create candles that resemble or mimic food. This choice is not just about personal preference—it’s about adhering to important laws, ensuring consumer safety, and staying true to my brand values.

The Safety Risks of Food-Like Candles

Candles that look or smell like food can pose serious safety risks, especially to children. According to the Food Imitations (Safety) Regulations 1989, it’s illegal to sell or market products that resemble food in a way that could mislead consumers into thinking they’re edible. Candles shaped like sweets, cakes, or fruit, for example, may tempt children to bite, suck, or swallow them. This can lead to choking hazards, poisoning, or injury.

The law prohibits such designs because the risk to vulnerable individuals, particularly children, is simply too high. While these candles might look adorable, to me, the potential dangers far outweigh the aesthetic appeal.

Why I Choose Safety First

As a creator, my priority is to bring joy and beauty to your home—without compromising safety. By avoiding food-like designs, I can ensure my products are safe for all households, including those with children or vulnerable adults.

For example, while I might create candles inspired by luxurious fragrances or beautiful nature themes, I steer clear of any shapes, colors, or scents that could be confused with edible items. This includes avoiding packaging that might mimic food or drink containers.

Clear Labelling and Responsibility

Beyond avoiding food-like designs, I also ensure that all my candles meet strict labelling requirements, as outlined by BS EN 15494. This includes clear warnings, instructions for safe use, and information about materials. Even though my designs are unlikely to be mistaken for food, it’s my responsibility to make safety information visible and accessible to all. So a candle care warnings and usage guide is available on the website as well as

a paper copy sent out with each order.

What This Means for You

When you choose my candles, you can have peace of mind knowing they’re designed with safety, quality, and care at heart. You’ll find beautiful creations inspired by nature, luxury, and wellness, but never products that compromise safety for novelty.

It’s tempting to create something that grabs attention, but as a brand inspired by love and care, I believe in creating items that bring lasting joy without unnecessary risks. Thank you for supporting a small business that puts safety and trust at the forefront.

If you have any questions about candle safety or my designs, I’m always happy to chat!
